SHOCKY'S NEW HEADLINER

Well, after a good 26 year run....Shocky's headliner was ready to retire.

Because I lack domestic skills and a sewing machine, I decided to enlist the help of a friend of mine....

A Mk2 guy, yes....BUT a Mk2 guy with 20 years of experience in the sewing type industry....skydiving rigs to be exact:

After dealing with the trauma of having to go to the fabric store to get new headliner material, I returned to Kelly's shop, feeling quite domestic like and proud of my fabric acquisition skills. Now it was time to lay the old headliner out and remove all of the seams.

Here you can see one of said seams removed:

And finally, all of the seams have been removed as well as the C pillar sections.

.....the rods which span the width of the headliner and lock into the sheet metal below the roof:

Shocky's poor dilapidated sun visors which will eventually be remade as well:

...and finally, the now seamless headliner is flattened out on the new material.....

And the tracing begins.....

Some of you might be wondering where Kelly wandered off to....well, besides interrupting the headliner tracing and trying to burn my hair with a hot knife....he was apparently working steadily of some super secret non-car related project of his own....

...and finally, the tracing is done...

...and the pattern is cut out....

The final pieces that will need to be attached and have seams added:

Using this machine:

(just kidding...that machine is a bit too beefy for this application)

On to the sewing part....

.....so, I thought it might be time to stretch my domestic wings and take off in the sewing department, but alas I was wrong.

Here I am diligently trying to sew the C pillar portion onto the main headliner section:

...and here I am now realizing that I have screwed up while sewing the C pillar portion onto the main headliner section:

...after relieving me of my sewing duties...Kelly makes everything much better and the headliner is done. Here is Kelly not so happily showing off the headliner....

...and here I am not so uh...hmmm...well yeah...Kelly chose an inopportune time to take the picture of triumph.....

(you take terrible pictures Kelly.....)

...and finally....a better look at the completed headliner:

....stay tuned for install pics....eventually....
